Important invention within the faculty
"Eiermann frame" (1953): Designed by Karlsruhe Technical University professor Egon Eiermann as an altar for the Matthäuskirche inPforzheim, the frame, welded together from ten steel tubes, was turned into a screwable and height-adjustable work and drawing table in the metal workshop of the Faculty of Architecture with the help of master locksmith Adam Wieland.and height-adjustable work and drawing table. The result was a design icon that is stillubiquitous design icon in German architecture schools to this day.
"Aulabau" (1893-1898): The current headquarters of the KIT Faculty of Architecture was once built as a prestigious auditorium building for the Technical University according to plans by the Karlsruhe building director and professor Josef Durm. The centerpiece of the complex was the lavishly decorated ballroom on the upper floor of the monumental central wing. After its destruction in 1944, it was rebuilt in a simplified, unadorned form and extended.
Outstanding current project example
With the RoofKIT building prototype, an interdisciplinary team from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology won the Solar Decathlon Europe 21-22 in summer 2022. In two and a half years of teamwork in teaching, research and practice, students and lecturers dealt with the sustainable use of resources, renewable energy generation and living together in the city of the future. The prototype can now be viewed on the KIT Campus South.
The most important personalities of the KIT Faculty of Architecture are its students. With their curiosity, commitment and creativity, they will contribute to tackling the challenges of the increasing scarcity of resources, climate change and its ecological and socio-economic consequences, the issues of digitalization and the preservation of the cultural heritage and identity of cities and regions.
